Geneva [Switzerland], September 25 (ANI): Kashmiri political activist Tasleema Akhtar delivered a strong address in Geneva, condemning Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir during the event “Balancing Counter Terrorism, Violent Extremism, and Human Rights: Challenges for Peace in Africa and Asia.”
Speaking about the transformation of Kashmir from a land once celebrated for its beauty and peace into a region scarred by violence, Akhtar highlighted the devastating human cost of terrorism. “This scourge has claimed countless lives, shattered families, and deeply damaged the social fabric of the Valley,” she said.
Akhtar accused Pakistan of deliberately fuelling militancy in areas such as Sopore, Shopian, and Baramulla, referring to covert operations launched in South Kashmir during the 1990s. According to her, Pakistan has used Kashmir’s strategic importance to sustain instability and inflict long-term suffering.
She further alleged that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has provided training, financial support, and logistical assistance to terror organisations including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
Highlighting the widening impact of terrorism, Akhtar noted that violence has spread beyond the Valley into regions like Poonch and Rajouri, leaving local communities trapped in fear, displacement, and economic hardship. She also stressed the severe psychological trauma faced by Kashmiri children after decades of conflict.
Calling on the international community to acknowledge Pakistan’s role in supporting terrorism, Akhtar urged stronger global action to dismantle terror networks and hold those responsible accountable. Referring to various UN resolutions condemning terrorism, she appealed for collective international pressure against states that support militant activities.
Concluding her speech with a call for unity against terrorism, she stated, “The world cannot afford to ignore Pakistan’s role in terrorism in Kashmir. Only through collective efforts can peace, dignity, and stability be restored for the people of Kashmir.”
The event was organised by the Forum on Inter-Cultural and Inter-Religious Dialogue (FICIR) and the International Center against Terrorism (ICAT) alongside the 57th Session of the UN Human Rights Council.
