Speaking during the 52nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 24, socio-political activist Tasleema Akhtar highlighted the rapid infrastructural development taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, crediting municipal bodies for driving growth and transformation across the region.
Akhtar stated that under the new administrative setup, local municipal institutions have played a crucial role in laying the foundation for development and modern infrastructure in the Valley. She pointed to major improvements in road connectivity and electricity access, noting that even the most remote villages in Jammu and Kashmir are now benefiting from these facilities.
“As Jammu and Kashmir moves towards elections under the new administrative framework, municipal bodies have emerged as key engines of development and infrastructure growth,” she said.
She further added that development projects worth nearly USD 700 million are currently underway in the region, while investment proposals of a similar scale have also been received, reflecting growing confidence in Jammu and Kashmir’s future.
Akhtar’s remarks at the UNHRC session highlighted the changing developmental landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and the ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, connectivity, and economic opportunities across the region.
